Hidden in Blue

[Poem – Translated from the original in Papiamentu: ‘Skondí den blou’]

In the North at times the sea turns green;

In the South sometimes it’s almost gray

But right in the middle it is always blue

Pearl of the Caribbean, lovingly caressed;

The heart of the world it holds

Without permission you walked into my life

and then without permission you walked out

Without knowing how much you changed in me

Without knowing who I really am

In the North at times the sea turns green;

In the South sometimes it’s almost gray

But right in the middle it is always blue

It is in your eyes

I want to be in your eyes

Navigating through the deep blue sea,

I want to discover that magical place

that every man who passes by

will always strive to conquer

In the North at times the sea turns green;

In the South sometimes it’s almost gray

But right in the middle it is always blue

You met another person

and yet another one you charmed

Tell me what the secret is

that’s hidden in your eyes

’cause every time I almost find it,

you look away and hide again

In the North at times the sea turns green;

In the South sometimes it’s almost gray

But right in the middle it is always blue

Pearl of the Caribbean, lovingly caressed;

The heart of the world it holds

And there I’ve made for us a harbour;

delicately built with little bits of love

and little bits of passion and pure sincerity

In that harbour I will patiently await,

hoping faithfully for your return,

your prompt return into my home
